মনমোহন সিং-ই ভারতের একমাত্র প্রধানমন্ত্রী, যার স্বাক্ষর টাকায় ছিল!

 গত ২৬ শে ডিসেম্বর ২০২৪ প্রয়াত ভারতের প্রধানমন্ত্রী মনমোহন সিংয়ের কর্মজীবনের কথা বলতে গেলেই এমন এক সাফল্যের উল্লেখ করতে হয়, যার ভাগিদার একমাত্র তিনিই। মনমোহন সিং-ই ভারতের একমাত্র প্রধানমন্ত্রী, যার স্বাক্ষর টাকায় ছিল।

দেশের মুদ্রা অর্থাৎ রুপিতে স্বাক্ষর করার সম্মান বা অধিকার সকলের নেই। একমাত্র রিজার্ভ ব্যাঙ্ক অব ইন্ডিয়ার গভর্নরই এই সম্মান পান। প্রতিটি নোটে রিজার্ভ ব্যাঙ্কের গভর্নরের স্বাক্ষর থাকে। রিজার্ভ ব্যাঙ্কের গভর্নর পরিবর্তন হলে মুদ্রিত নোটে গভর্নরের স্বাক্ষরও পরিবর্তন হয়। নতুন গভর্নরের স্বাক্ষর যোগ হয় নোটে।

২০০৪ সালে ভারতের ত্রয়োদশতম প্রধানমন্ত্রী হিসেবে দায়িত্ব নেওয়ার আগে মনমোহন সিং অর্থমন্ত্রীও ছিলেন। তিনি ২০০৪ সাল ২০১৪ সাল পর্যন্ত ভারতের প্রধানমন্ত্রী ছিলেন I তবে রাজনীতিতে প্রবেশের আগে তিনি রিজার্ভ ব্যাঙ্কের গভর্নর হিসাবেও দায়িত্ব পালন করেছেন। ১৯৮২ সাল থেকে ১৯৮৫ সাল পর্যন্ত তিনি আরবিআই-র পঞ্চদশ গভর্নর ছিলেন তিনি। সেই সময় দেশের মুদ্রায় মনমোহন সিংয়ের স্বাক্ষর ছিল।

এছাড়াও ১৯৭৬ সালে ভারতের ফিনান্স সেক্রেটারি হওয়ার সুবাদে ১ টাকার নোটেও তাঁর স্বাক্ষর ছিল I এই প্রসঙ্গে উল্লেখ করা যেতে পারে ভারতবর্ষের কেবল ১ টাকার নোটেই ফিনান্স সেক্রেটারির স্বাক্ষর থাকে I অর্থাৎ ১ টাকার নোট সরাসরি ভারত সরকার ইস্যু করে থাকেন I ভারতের ১ টাকা ব্যাতিত অন্য সমস্ত নোটে রিজার্ভ ব্যাংক অফ ইন্ডিয়ার গভর্নরের স্বাক্ষর থাকে অর্থাৎ ২, ৫, ১০, ৫০,১০০, ৫০০, ১০০০, ২০০০ টাকার নোট গুলি ইস্যু করে থাকেন রিজার্ভ ব্যাংক অফ ইন্ডিয়া I

Dr Manmohan Singh, the only Indian prime minister whose signature adorned currency notes---the one-rupee note as Finance Secretary, and all other notes as RBI Governor.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away on Dec 26 th’2024, holds a rare distinction in India's currency history due to his association with currency notes.

Dr Singh, who held several prominent positions throughout his career, including that of Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, was responsible for signing the Rs 1 note. This rare occurrence set him apart in India's financial history.

Moreover, Dr Singh had also served as the 15 th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (1982-1985), during which his signature appeared on other denomination notes.

While the Prime Minister of India is a prestigious position, they do not typically have the authority to sign currency notes. Dr Singh's legacy include his signature on currency notes.

During Dr. Manmohan Singh's tenure as Prime Minister (2004–2014), the BSE Sensex soared by an impressive 398%, closing positively in 8 out of 10 years. Landmark years included 2009 with an 81% return and 2006–2007 with 47% each.

As India's fourth longest-serving PM, the architect of India's economic reforms, Dr. Singh also made significant contributions as a former RBI Governor and Finance Minister, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s economic and political landscape.

“I Promise to pay the bearer the sum of ***Rupees” /'मैं धारक को***रुपये अदा करने का वचन देता हूं'

Whenever you last held a banknote in your hands, chances are you may not have paid attention to these words. But the meaning these words hold are both simple and significant. In meaning, if somebody presents a note of say,100 rupees then it is the liability of the RBI to pay the bearer goods/gold of 100 rupee at any cost. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has the responsibility of printing currency banknotes in India. Every single banknote has the declaration of the RBI governor, here the familiar 2,10,50 and 100 rupee banknotes signed by Dr Manmohan Singh. Besides being PM twice, Dr Singh was widely acknowledged and respected in the finance world - he became Governor of the RBI.

But wait, did you know that RBI prints the notes of all denominations except 1 rupee note because it is printed by the Ministry of Finance. Dr Singh was also Finance Secretary and so you will find one rupee notes with his sign as well.
